This Power Ranger has STYLE!

I was going to begin by noting that action figures don’t often win me over with their outfits, but then I guess the costume is generally an important feature of toys. I mean, they’re based on fictional superheroes and whatnot, and whereas the “heroes” in real life tend to wear generic suits and uniforms, part of what makes comic, cartoon, and other fictional superdudes and dudettes so unique is their costumes.

I suppose the Power Rangers RPM Full Throttle Triceratops Ranger is special, however, in that I don’t often fixate so heavily on one aspect of the figure. He does have other merits — decent articulation, cool and plentiful accessories, and a price tag that’s not in the double digits — but, like Chun-Li‘s thighs, I find it difficult to see past the stylish smoking jacket. I’d probably love this figure (though not nearly as much) even if it had t-hips and swivel shoulders. And no, Bandai, that is not permission to start skimping on articulation… unless every figure comes packaged with a removable cloth smoking jacket. This kind of style needs to be shared.

Anyway, I hope y’all are having a great holiday season! Until next time…

Hey Wes, this is Nelson from the Technodrome. Here in Venezuela we don’t have RPM figures yet, we are still in the Jungle Fury period. I liked the JF figures since I startied seeing them in stores, but come on, how could I buy something like that? It’s Power Rangers, and a season I have not seen. But then I read you review…

“I recommend you get one if this figures, even if you don’t watch the show!”

Well I gave in and bought the two pack of blue ranger and silver (bat) ranger. I liked them and out of curioisity I watched the first episode of the show. It was horrible and started getting buyers’s remorse. I tried the first episode of Gekiranger. It did not work for me neither. I saw the second Jungle Fury episode. Still bad. Maybe the third one will work? Nah, still crappy.

But somehow now I’ve already watched more than half the season and have three more figures.

    AND THEY ARE NOT CHEAP!

    Damn, I’m weak.

(P.S.: I’m making an edited version of Jungle Fury, no Flint, no pinzas in the face, things like that.)

  • Nelson says:

Erm, it’s “pizzas” and not “pinzas”. Ooops.

    • Wes says:

Well, I’m glad you at least like the figures! I haven’t seen Gekiranger, but I do love Jungle Fury. I don’t recall the pizzas in the face (I’m sure it happened once or twice, but I don’t remember it being a running gag), but yeah, Flit could get kind of annoying. Still, I kinda like that he’s there — I hear he’s also in Gekiranger, so somehow his inclusion makes Jungle Fury more authentic and truer to the source material. 🙂

Anyway, I liked the show a lot, but then maybe I was too smitten with Lily (Lily, Lily, Lily) to care about any faults! Still, keep me posted if your tune changes — you at least have to admit that the Phantom Beast Generals are damned cool, if only in appearance. I wish Bandai had made figures of them.

Oh, and you say they’re not cheap — how expensive are we talking? Admittedly one of the biggest draws of Power Rangers for me is the cost, as they’re cheaper than pretty much everything except clearance toys and 3.75″ figures on sale. If they were the same price as DCUC and Marvel Legends, I’d probably pass.

  • Nelson says:

Oh, don’t get me wrong, man. The show has grown on me, otherwise I wouldn’t be this far into it. I’m up to the Violet Wolf Ranger episodes (but why didn’t RJ morph before?)
About the Phantom Beast Generals I can’t comment, I havent reach that point yet. But generally speaking the monster desings are cool, action figure worthy.

About the prices. All action figures are expensive over here, it’s not just a Power Rangers thing. Each Jungle Fury fig costs the equivalent of 51 US$. The two packs fare a liiiittle better at 74 US$. Ouch.

Oh and the Lily figure should have come with that elephant chainball thingie.

Anyway, thanks for the cool reviews, man. I enjoy them a lot.

    • Wes says:

Good to hear that it’s grown on you, at least! And I assume RJ didn’t morph before because he hadn’t been sufficiently inspired or thought his students could handle the hero work on their own.

Aaaand I kinda want to rewatch the season now.

Regarding those prices… bloody hell. Where the heck are you? It’d probably be cheaper to import them, you know — no matter where you are, I can’t imagine shipping costing $40.

And yes, Lily with the Jungle Mace would have been pretty neat. Alas!

Anyway, I’m glad you enjoy the reviews, Nelson — hopefully I’ll have more in the near future. 🙂

  • Nelson says:

Sorry I took so long to reply (and also sorry to be hijacking what is supposed to be a RPM Triceratops Ranger talkback with a Jungle Fury conversation)

I live in Venezuela. Sometimes is better to just import but believe it or not sometimes it is worse, as you not only have to pay the shippng cost but also import taxes, and go to custom and be looked funny for buying action figures. If you’re lucky you also get the question “is this what you bought? I suppose it’s for your son”. I’ve found there are ways to avoid this, like buying loose figures only and that they’re are shipped on envelipes instead of a box, but that fails sometimes too. It’s a nightmare.

I finished watching the season and overall I liked it andwas sad the see it end. The next to last episiode was pure awesomesauce, as was the introduction of the “evil” spirit rangers.
Now I’m torn between watching RPM or starting back to Turbo where I stopped watching years ago.

  • Hero says:

We’ve just got RPM here in the UK and I was baffled when I saw this guy on the shelves.

I’ve never seen this character on the show before. So I went to Scary Crayon to get the lo-down.

Great review Wes. Another Ranger figure I would’nt mind owning.

    ===HERO

    • Wes says:

Yeah, he’s probably the greatest non-show Power Ranger figure ever (certain armored versions notwithstanding). And they fit in perfectly with Doctor Who (and Primeval) figures, so there’s all the more reason for a UK-based fan to be interested in them! 😀

  • clark says:

I picked up the mammoth ranger today….and although he is fun i don’t think that I’ll be getting any more power rangers. But let it said that I’m willing to try new things 🙂

    • Wes says:

Well, that’s understandable — they are all more/less the same figure (at least within the respective lines/sublines), so there’s no particular reason to get more than one unless you’re familiar with the characters or want to have a multi-Ranger display for whatever reason. It’s kinda the same way with TMNT, DCUC, or any other line that relies heavily on part reuse, I guess!

I’m glad you think he’s fun, though! I only picked up the Triceratops Ranger from the Paleomax Ranger group, what with them being non-show characters and all, but I really like the design of those jackets. 🙂

  • anonymous says:

Wes, you are misguided as well as racist with regard to your ‘views’ about Miss Halle Berry as Catwoman. Face it,…I’m sure you find her sexy and attractive as hell ,as well as the rest of white men in America. Be honest and give credit where credit is due.

  • desperate mum says:

    Help!!!!!!!!!!

My 4 year old is RPM mad and wants “baddies” for christmas. Who are the baddies please???????????

    • Wes says:

I think the only baddie released in the RPM line was the Grinder — all of the other releases were Power Rangers. You could probably get away with calling the Paleomax Rangers bad guys, though, since those three Rangers weren’t actually on the show. Good luck!
