New Short Story: The Lion That Wore Glasses

And here’s that short story I promised: “The Lion That Wore Glasses”. I actually wrote this back in 2005 and sort of forgot about it after a few failed attempts to get it published for money. Upon rediscovering it recently and rereading it in full before posting it, however, I’ve recalled how much fun I had writing it. I can completely understand why the fiction magazines didn’t want to print it — it is an odd and curiously pretentious piece that, like dreams and other similarly strange narratives, doesn’t really have an obvious point — but then again that’s the kind of stuff I enjoy reading and writing the most. It’s telling that Kafka is one of my favorite authors and Waking Life is one of my favorite films.

Anyway, I hope y’all enjoy the story as much as I do! I remember being pretty discouraged about my inability to sell it back in the day — after all, I am quite fond of the story and don’t like to see things I enjoy rejected — but I’m still glad that I wrote it. 🙂

All for now, then. Expect new articles when Scary-Crayon turns FOUR YEARS OLD this Friday! Draw a little cake (one that is not a lie) in the Jan 25 box on your calendars or something.

  • Wes, that was GREAT!

Oh the things that can run through someone’s mind at the zoo. Especially, when confronted by an unusual sight like that.

My guess is that the zoo’s vet noticed that the Lion had vision problems and had the glasses custom-made.

If I ran a fiction magazine, I’d publish it. Of course, I’d publish a lot of stuff that the other magazines wouldn’t touch.

It would all be either stuff like this, or dark humor, or really sugary sweet gooey love stories, or my favouriteoff-beat” love stories (my favourite film is Chungking Express). I think the only one who would read this magazine is me.

But, come think of it, I don’t read any fiction magazines (not counting comics, of which I read many). So I guess I’m not the usual audience anyway.

Wow, looking at this post, I think you’re starting to rub off on me.

  • Wow, I’m not sure how many Pixy Stix I had coursing through my system when I posted that.

    Sorry.

  • Wes says:

Man, I wish I had some Pixy Stix. Those things were awesome. 🙂

Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed the story! I too would enjoy a magazine consisting of offbeat and unconventional stories that involve weird little tangents or other areas that aren’t traditionally explored in your standard media. I would enjoy this even more since it would mean that perhaps I could actually find a paying outlet for my work, but still. 😉

Do stay tuned — I’ve still got a handful of old stories I couldn’t sell that I mean to post on SC. In fact, I meant to post one at the end of last month but never got around to it… so that should be coming up pretty soon. Pester me if I forget. 🙂

I’ve nothing more to add to the story itself. I can only that it spoke to a fellow bespectacled lion who’s efforts to keep the pride in line can now be diverted to considerations requiring the use of the glasses rather than the roar. Thank you Wes.

  • Simone C. says:

I don’t really get it, but maybe I’m not supposed to since there’s not really a point? But I still liked it. 🙂

    • Wes says:

I’m glad you enjoyed it! If there is a point, it’s more about our tendency to overanalyze things and potentially freak ourselves out over nothing (but then again, maybe it’s not really nothing). 🙂

Reply to Wes!
