Street Fighter II: The Freaky PC Versions!

You wouldn’t believe how much time I spent playing and screencapping these damned games and writing this review, but here you are: a somewhat detailed look at the early PC versions of Street Fighter II. Note that I stopped italicizing the title’s abbreviated acronym form fairly early in this article, which I think is going to be ASCN (accepted Scary-Crayon notation) from here on out. As much as I like italics, I get sick of typing <-i->-W-O-R-D-<-/-i-> every time I want to mention something by title. I’m guessing I’ll keep the italics for one-word movie title abbreviations, though.

Hmm, that was kinda technical (I just know you found it to be terribly interesting, though), so here’s something decidedly less so — a wav file that I accidentally recorded while screencapping SFIBM 1.98. Sounds like the kind of thing that would set a class of sixth graders giggling to me.

And let us not forget Dusty Plastic HELL: Hot Flash #81, which features screencaps from the new TMNT toon with modified subtitles from yours truly. The comic is named for the episode: “Rogue in the House”.

Finally, again, I apologize about the length of time it’s taken me to update. Hopefully playing these games will keep you busy until I get around to posting another article (send me Sagat screencaps, damnit! pleeease ;_;), but in the event that you’re looking for more reading material, Greg recently posted an interesting article about his hometown of Fairfield, CA, on Pop Arena. Molly posts weekly TV movie recaps and other fun pieces on Alligator Juice. And I can’t vouch for the other stuff on SydLexia.com, but I came across this review of the arcade SF1 while searching for the PC version download. Distractions can be amusing.

All for now, minna-san. Until next time, remember: DISCIPLINE, JUSTICE, COMMITMENT!!! 😀

You know, I thought the PC SF1 game was insanely hard…till I played Arcade SF1. The gameplay is PERFECT in that THEY ARE JUST REALLY INSANELY HARD TO BEAT CAUSE THE CONTROLS ARE WAY TOO EVIL.

That said, I’m taking you to task on the Super SF2 PC port as being good. Sure, it’s got gameplay down pat, even if it’s got that Long Torso Vision thing going…but the music. My god…the music.

According to a Capcom PR guy I knew back in the day, SSF2 PC is a Genesis port, and it sure looks it.

SSF2T PC is something I love to still play. It’s too “squinched” to play correctly, but it just has so so so so many memories….I pulled the soundtrack off the CD just to relive them. 🙂

Hah! This is so awesome. My friend had the Street Fighter II video game for NES and and we would play it when we’d hang out. She was Chun-Li, I was Ryu.

Have you ever watched the truly god-awful but addicting show that’s on Wham!/Movie Plex called “Street Fighter” ? It’s really messed up.

Keep up the work! You should tackle some more video games. 😉

Jenn: PC SF1 is THE reason that DOSBox needs savestates. The game wouldn’t be quite so frustrating if one could save the game (or even continue, for that matter), but when the controls, the opponents, and even the setup itself is unforgiving, there’s a freakin’ problem. I just want to see Sagat again. 🙁

Admittedly, I remember the older PC SF2 games far better than the later, better incarnations. I think I had the SNES (with the SSF2 cartridge) and even the PSX by the time those came out, so I was far more interested in playing WWF Wrestlemania and Toshinden and DBZ UB22 (gotta love that early PSX disc swap trick). I had a buddy who was obsessed with all things Street Fighter, though, so I got a brief look at the games when he was fooling with them — and given my familiarity with Capcom’s past PC outings, I was fairly impressed. Still, with the Alpha series making the rounds and the onset of far better and more interesting PC fighting games (frex, One Must Fall: 2097), I just wasn’t all that into SSF2 anymore. 😛

That seems really odd that they’d port the Genesis version, though!

Andi: Do you mean the live action movie or the cartoon based on it? Yes on both counts — check the Spectare section for reviews of two of the cartoon episodes. I’ve got the entire set, so there will be more someday… 😉

Oh, and it slipped my mind at 4+ AM when I posted this stuff, but y’all have Jenn here to thank for a lot of today’s article, since she was the one who forwarded me the SFIBM versions. So do check out her site(s) too!

If Dhalsim so so good and so tough in the official PC version, why didn’t you post some videos of him in action?

  • Andi says:

Actually the only one I saw was the Live Action one, so I was referring to that. 😉 But I knew about the cartoon. So I was possibly asking about the live-action one. 🙂

I just realized I own the Street Fighter game for PS2 that came out last year or the year before.

    I want to see more SF-ness! 🙂

  • Wes says:

agustinaldo: Very well — see the latest update for Dhalsim videos and an answer to your question!

Andi: Well, we seem to be on kind of an SF and retro-gaming kick here, so there’s definitely more SF-related stuff on the way. Stay tuned! 🙂

  • why must you know? says:

wes. you are the funniest person ever. i read all of your dusty plastic heel in one night. keep up the good work.

  • This reminds me of the Gameboy SF2. When I was younger I had no SNES or Genesis or PC so GB was my only option. Like the PC port it was very different but it was the only SF2 I had for awhile so I still loved it.

Anyway, I think I might like the korean bootleg better than the real game.

Also, I think Andi is referring to the “Street Fighter II v” anime that comes on Encore Wam, which I think is actually rather good.

  • Wes says:

Aha! I read “godawful” and “Street Fighter” and immediately thought of the US cartoon — I actually liked V. (I bought the complete series DVD set for $10 at half.com. What a steal!) I think it starts out fantastic and fizzles out midway through the series and draaags on at the end, but it’s still not bad. Barring the Alpha Generations anime, which I haven’t seen yet, the best animated SF adaptation is probably the first animated movie.

And I remember Gameboy SF2! I much preferred the SNK GB conversions, though — they didn’t play very much like their console and arcade counterparts either, but they did have those adorable SD sprites. 🙂

  • Yeah, I definately like the early SF2v episodes better than the rest as well. Just so much energy!

Also, I agree about the SF2 anime movie but I wish the full japanese version with the Chun Li nudity was available here in the states.

  • Wes says:

Aaand on that note, we search eBay…

  • Actually, I just checked the wikipedia on it, and it looks like I get my wish after all. (the uncut version hits the U.S. this july.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.....ated_Movie

  • Wes says:

Excellent! I guess I can wait for it, then — that and Alpha Generations are the only SF2 movies/shows I don’t own. Soon the collection will be complete…

Personally, I’d like to see a spinoff series about the life and times of Blanka — in Spanish, with English subtitles. 😉

  • Agreed about the Blanka spinoff.

I haven’t seen either Alpha anime yet, but they look pretty cool. I also want to check out more of the current SF comic book, I’ve only seen one issue and I was quite impressed.

Anyway, the SF hack I really hope exists (and am half tempted to bring about except I’m trying to make my own Fighting Game) is one that replaces Sagat with “Bob Sagat” which is Sagat with Bob Saget’s head. That would be even cooler than the bootleg NES SFII with Mario added as a character.

    FUKEN HELL

  • Well, the SF article was wonderful – well done, soldier!

I’d like to add something about the C=64 version i had (and still have) but at the moment i’m too lazy to do that, maybe in future….

  • pablo says:

Maybe it’s too late and nobody reads this but still i’ll try asking: i’m sure there were more versions of SFIBM and SFLIU, in fact i’m looking for a SFIBM version that had Andy and Terry Bogard with no success so far… anyone there who knows where to get these?? Thanks in advance and a very nice article

  • Sorry to post in a year old thread (not that I’m the first here to do that), but I’m just letting you know that I recently got the uncut SF2 movie on DVD.

It’s still awesome (I forgot what a genuinely good movie it is), the Chun-Li shower scene is hot and revealing, and I think I like the softer, more emotional Japanese music better than the bold music and hard rock of the US dub.

Also, got the Alpha Generations OVA. I loved it. It’s a great focus on the Ryu and Gouki connection (and has some nice Sakura fan service).

Still haven’t seen the SF Alpha movie yet. I heard I’m not missing much, but I still want to see it.
