Astro Boy’s Buzzsaw Samurai!!!

Yep, new toy review — this time of the Buzzsaw Samurai from Jazwares’s 6″ Astro Boy movie line. He’s a decent enough figure, and I really like the design, but he’s certainly not amazing. Kids will likely disagree.

And Halloween is on the way! Admittedly, I have no plans to do any explicitly Halloween-themed content, but I don’t feel bad about that — this is Scary-freakin’-Crayon, after all, and it’s always like Halloween here! That said, there are a lot of other sites breaking out special Halloween layouts, so check out the sites in the links block to the right for some additional spooky flavor. In particular, Articulated Discussion‘s got some cool Scare of the Night photographs coming in addition to its temporary Halloween layout (I’m hoping to share some spooky guest content over there as well; I’ll keep you posted!), and Infinite Hollywood‘s rocking some Halloweeny goodness as well. Speaking of that site and today’s review figure, IH reviewed the 3.75″ Astro Boy a week and a half ago — so if you were thinking about picking that figure up to pair with the Buzzsaw Samurai, you might want to read that article.

Okay, that’s all for now. Hopefully we’ll have more content for you soon!

P.S. When I’m fooling around with the css and manage to break stuff on the site, you guys have to tell me! Otherwise I’ll never know until I happen to notice the errors… which sometimes takes a while even when they’re staring me in the face. 😛

Thanks for the plugs. You sold this figure to me, BTW.

And in the ultimate sting on the ol’ pocket book, I got him on sale today at TRU for $7.99!

All their Astro Boy figures are 20% of in celebration of the movie I guess.

I’ll probably review him soon and I’ll give you some linkage. Although I don’t know exactly when I’ll review it cause I got a few other reviews lined up first with the Halloween theme. We shall see!

    • Wes says:

Yeah, they’re on sale this week at TRU. Lucky you, Newt — $7.99 is a great price for the Buzzsaw Samurai! I look forward to seeing what you think of the ‘bot when you get around to reviewing him.

And take note, Jazwares — I sold one of your figures through a review! Send review samples so I can sell more. 😉

I just watched the first episode of the original BW Astro Boy last night.
    Dang.
That show was pretty messed up. There were at least three possible references to pedophilia in there.
On the other hand, it’s easy to see how influential it was on pop culture. Only now do I realize that really horrible movie A.I. was practically Astro Boy sans rocket feet. (Not to mention more direct homages like “Big Guy and Rusty” and “Megaman.”)

    • Wes says:

Is it really that messed up, Tresob? I was thinking about tracking it down if I ever saw the new movie, but now you’ve scared me. Pedophilia references = bad… unless they’re in one of those weird yaoi animes. In those cases, “bad” doesn’t even begin to describe the outlandish horror.

Also, you didn’t like A.I.? I really enjoyed that film! It’s one of few movies longer than two hours that I own on DVD and have no problem watching in a single sitting. Also, Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law are great.

      • Tresob says:

I’m not sure if the perversion in Astro Boy is intentional or not. Perhaps the weirdest scene is when Astro Boy shares energy with another boy robot whose battery receptors are on his buttocks. The other boy robot literally turns around and bends over before the screen turns to black. When Astro Boy is originally sold to the circus, the ringleader (who has not been identified as such yet) has an unnerving lascivious grin during the whole transaction. I’m blanking on the third moment…

        I can’t say that I was a fan of A.I.
Movies please me more completely when they have under seven endings.
Among other complaints, I thought it was implausible that people would have protested when they saw the boy robot in the fighting arena. Even the original episode of Astro Boy reveals the darker side of human nature–most people would have few qualms watching a boy risk being torn apart (and anyone who complained would probably be shouted down or jeered at).
The one thing I did enjoy in AI, however, was the robot bear. He should have had his own movie.

Glowing red eyes? That would be enough for me to plunk down the money and I know less about AstroBoy than you did, though I liked the comparison to Abdow’s Big Boy…now I’m hungry!

  • Newt says:

    You mean Frisch’s BIG BOY….

Feel free for the next guy to insert his local Big Boy chain of preference.

I’ve been pretty tempted to get one of the Astroboy bad guys, but I don’t think I’ve seen this one yet. Once he reaches $5 (big lots maybe?) then I might get him. Thanks for the review.

    • Wes says:

Have they shown up in Big Lots? I don’t recall seeing them anywhere other than TRU, and it’s admittedly been a while. I do know the 3.75″ Astro Boy figures are on clearance there… if you can call a $1 reduction a clearance price.
